Donald Schumacher, 91

Memorial service for Donald L. Schumacher, 91, Marengo, was held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, at First Presbyterian Church, Marengo. He died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids.

The Rev. Diane Miller officiated at the service.

A memorial fund has been established.

Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, was in charge of arrangements.

Donald Lester Schumacher was born Sept. 19, 1921, in rural Marengo, the son of Carl W. and Ruth Cooperider Schumacher. He attended Iowa County schools and worked alongside his parents on the farm.

He married Margaret Wesley June 5, 1955. He was employed with Pioneer Seed for 35 years, retiring in 1987.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Marengo, for over 50 years. He enjoyed taking walks, camping, fishing, reading and joining his friends for daily coffee.

He was an Iowa Women’s Basketball fan and had been to every auditorium in the Big 10.

He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Schumacher is survived by his wife, Margaret; two sons, Donald “Ray” and Carol and Doug and Kari; three daughters, Sheryl and Gordon Semler, Ruth and Delbert Fiser and Susan and Daniel Carlson; nine grandchildren, Jason Semler, Nathan Fiser, Jon Fiser, Amelia Schumacher, Harley Schumacher, Amy Roach, April Arp, Katelyn Wolter and Kameryn Warren; nine great-grandchildren and one sister, Verla Greene.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Richard, Carl, Lloyd and Eldon.
