Helen Sandersfeld, 90

Celebration of life service for Helen A. Sandersfeld, 90, Homestead, was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 25, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, rural Homestead. She died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2012, at the Lantern Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Coralville.

The Rev. Terry Small officiated at the service.

Burial was in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery.

Casket bearers were Justin Sandersfeld, Mark Sandersfeld, Steve Sandersfeld, Owen Emanuel, Gerry Barr and Eric Denison.

Memorials may be made to St. John’s Ladies Aid or Iowa City Hospice.

Helen A. Sandersfeld was born July 22, 1922, the daughter of the Rev. Otto and Lena (Blume) Beer, in Sao Leopoldo, Brazil, where her parents served as church missionaries. The family returned to the United States in 1930 and settled in Homestead in 1938.

After graduating from Marengo High School, she worked for a local attorney and at the Iowa County Court House.

She married Waldemar (Wally) Sandersfeld Oct. 5, 1947, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, rural Homestead. They made their home in rural Homestead, where they raised their three sons, John, Tom and Charles.

She enjoyed serving on St. John’s Ladies Aid, Tuesday afternoon bowling in Williamsburg and watching sports of all kinds, especially the Cubs.

She lived in Williamsburg from 2002 to 2011, when she became a resident at Lantern Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Coralville.

Sandersfeld is survived by one son, Thomas R. and Jerilyn, Sandersfeld, Iowa City; two brothers, Herb and Amanda Beer, Cedar Rapids, and Martin and Jo Beer, Iowa City; four sisters, Paula Sandersfeld, North English; Norma Mollison and Sylvia Taulbee, both Minneapolis, Minn., and Lois Dunnavent, Harrisburg, Pa.; one brother-in-law, Vernon and Esther Sandersfeld, Homestead; two daughters-in-law, Sandra Sandersfeld, Sioux Falls, S.D., and Barbara Sandersfeld Denison and Eric, North English; four grandchildren, Erin and Matt Nosbisch, Tyler Sandersfeld, Justin Sandersfeld and Shaelyn Sandersfeld; two great-grandchildren, Rainey and Trice Nosbisch, and many nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two sons, John and Charles (Chuck), and two sisters, Dorothea and Esther.
