Maggie Kirby, 86

Memorial service for Margaret J. “Maggie” Kirby, 86, Marengo, was held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo. She died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2012, at the Oldorf Hospice House, Hiawatha.

The Rev. Joseph Roost officiated at the service.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Marengo.

A memorial fund has been established.

Margaret Jean Kirby was born June 26, 1926, in Marengo, the daughter of Joseph T. and M. Maude O’Rourke McGurk. She graduated from Marengo High Shool in 1944. She attended the University of Iowa, Iowa City, with studies in liberal arts and sciences and humanities.

She married Richard Hadenfeldt and the couple later divorced.

She married Jerry Kirby Aug. 25, 1968.

She worked with various businesses, including Amana Refrigeration, Smulekoff’s, Big “G” Foods and the U.S. Census Bureau.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo; the Altar and Rosary Guild and the Marengo American Legion Auxiliary.

Kirby is survived by one brother, Lawrence “Skeeter” McGurk, Walford; one sister, Mary Davis, Cedar Rapids; one sister-in-law, Donna McGurk, Cedar Rapids, and 11 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, in 1986; her parents and one brother, Francis McGurk.
