Harold Eastman, 73

Harold L. Eastman, 73, of West Branch died Friday, Dec. 23, 1994, at University Hospitals after a long illness.
There will be no services or visitation. The body has been cremated.

Memorial donations may be made to the donor’s choice of charity. Callahan Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Eastman was born July 26, 1921, in Anita to Jay and Cliffie (Croft) Eastman. He attended Iowa City schools. He entered the military in 1942 and served during World War II, fighting in the Normandy Invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. He was discharged in 1946. He then worked as a train order clerk with the Rock Island Railroad from 1946 to 1985.

He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa in 1948 and his Master of Fine Arts from the UI Writers’ Workshop in 1950. He was a poet, painter and writer of short stories and novels. His work was published in Western Review, Accent and Epoch. He was the founder of Keokuk Art Center, where he taught painting.

Survivors include his stepmother, Leona Eastman of Williamsburg, one aunt, and three cousins.

His parents and one foster sister, Madonna Greazel died earlier.
