Glenn Wolter, 81

Celebration of life service for Glenn F. Wolter, 81, Homestead, was held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, at Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Williamsburg. He died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2012, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.

Organist was Karin Winwood and vocalists were Bill and Rita McDonald and Ed and Sandra Ficken. Music selections included “Just As I Am,” “Nearer My God to Thee” and “Amazing Grace.”
Burial was in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery, rural Homestead, with military rites by Iburg Poulson VFW Post 8797. Casket bearers were John Roemig, Gary Wolter, William Wolter, Brett Heitshusen, William Heitshusen and Micheal Welsh.

Memorials may be made to the LaJune Wolter Scholarship Fund or Iburg Poulson VFW Post 8797, Williamsburg.

Glenn Frederick Wolter was born Oct. 2, 1931, near Homestead, the son of William J. and Rose Johanna (Wichmann) Wolter. He attended St. John’s parochial school and graduated from Marengo High School in 1950. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, from 1952 to 1954.

He married LaJune Katherine Nemitz June 10, 1955, at St. Paul Lutheran Church – Hanover, near Charter Oak. He farmed near Homestead and worked for Homestead Implement for 32 years before going to work for the VA Medical Center, Iowa City, retiring in 1990.

He enjoyed visiting with family and friends, especially his grandsons. He also enjoyed collecting and restoring antique farm machinery, especially Minneapolis Moline tractors.

He was a lifelong member of Iburg Poulson VFW Post 8797, Williamsburg.

He had been a resident of Highland Ridge Care Center where he also enjoyed visiting with friends and staff.

Wolter is survived by two daughters, Jeanne Welsh, Williamsburg, and Patti and David Heitshusen, South Amana; three grandsons, William and Abby Heitshusen, Washington, D.C.; Brett Heitshusen, Colorado, and Micheal Welsh, Williamsburg; a great-granddughter, Taylor; a sister, Betty and Robert Roemig, Homestead; one sister-in-law, Mary Wolter, Homestead; one brother-in-law, Edwin and Frances Nemitz, Charter Oak, and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, in 2008; his parents, two brothers, Jerry Wolter and one in infancy, and a son-in-law, William Welsh.
