Williamsburg: Funeral services for Meta Margretha (Mattie) Kuesel, 87, who died Tuesday, Mar. 21, 1972 at Marengo Memorial hospital, were held Friday, Mar. 24 at 2 p.m. from St. Paul’s Lutheran church here. She had been in failing health for some time. The Rev. L.H. Aurich officiated.

Mrs. Ernest Huedepohl at the organ provided mujsic and flowers were cared for by the Frank Koehns. Casket carriers were William Kuesel, Edgar Ficken, Lanny Wilcox, Garvin Smith, Willard Meyer and William Fetzer. Burial was in St. John’s Lutheran cemetery, Lincoln township.

Miss Kuesel was born Oct. 7, 1884 in Hanover, Germany, to Henry and Maria Meyer Kuesel. She was baptized Oct. 21, 1884 at Holtum, Germany, and came to America with her parents in 1891, spending the rest of her lifetime in Iowa county. She was confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran church Apr. 21, 1898 by Pastor Kitzmann. She moved to Williamsburg in 1925 and since 1955 made her home with her sister, Mrs. William [Annna] Meyer.

‘Mattie’ as she was affectionately known by many, spent much of her lifetime caring for children of neighbors and friends as well as relatives, and also looked after a number of elderly folk.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Herman Kuesel.
