Funeral Mass for Leo M. Smith Sr., 75, Williamsburg, was held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 17, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Williamsburg. He died Thursday, Sept. 13, 2012, at home.

The Rev. Joseph Roost officiated at the service. Vocalists were Shelby Smith and Courtney Phillips.

Burial was in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery with military honors by Iburg-Poulson VFW Post 8797, Williamsburg. Casket bearers were Larry Smith, Leo Smith, Mike Smith, Lucas Smith, Charles Smith and David Jennings.

Memorials may be made to the Williamsburg High School Athletic Department or the Iowa County 4-H Scholarship Fund.

Leo Michael Smith Sr. was born Dec. 13, 1936, in Johnson County, the son of Lewis and Marie (Stockman) Smith. He graduated from Tiffin High School in 1955. In 1956, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served overseas for two years. He also served as an Army Reserve for four years, being discharged in 1961.

He married Anna Marie Hahn Nov. 26, 1960. They were blessed with five children, Michael, Carolyn, Lawrence, Leo Jr. and Debra. They later divorced.

He farmed in the Holbrook area for 45 years. In addition to farming, he was an ag mechanic and a truck driver. In later years, he delivered auto parts in Iowa City, retiring in 2011.

He enjoyed puzzles, bowling, playing cards, hunting, fishing, going on vacation with family and attending all of his children’s and grandchildren’s activities.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and Farm Bureau.

Smith is survived by five children, Michael and Julie Smith, North English; Carolyn Crew, Williamsburg; Lawrence “Larry” and Tammy Smith, Conroy; Leo Jr. and Sherri Smith, Williamsburg, and Debra and Mike Rogers, Laquey, Mo.; 18 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Hubert and Shirley Smith, Coventry, R.I., and Dean and Sylvia Smith, Oxford; two sisters, Arlene and Art Miller and Ruby and Carson Potter, all Oxford.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Harry Smith, and one sister, Barbara Smith.
