Celebration of life service for Melvin R. Hopp, 82, Homestead, was held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 10, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, rural Homestead. He died Sept. 6, 2012, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids.

The Rev. Terry Small officiated at the service.

Organist was Joanne Huedepohl. Selections included “Amazing Grace,” “Abide With Me” and “I Know that My Redeemer Lives.”

Burial was in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery with military rites by the Marengo American Legion. Casket bearers were Robert Schultz, Larry Hopp, Nathan Hopp, Matthew Petz, Rick Peterson and Neal Schwarting. Honorary casket bearers were Crystal Hopp, Brittany Petz, Avery Hopp and Aaron and Amber Gerard.

Memorials may be made to St. Luke’s Hospice and St. John’s Lutheran Church, Homestead.

Melvin Roy Hopp was born June 16, 1930, near South Amana, the son of Carl W. and Bertha R. (Newkirk) Hopp. He attended St. John’s parochial school, Homestead. He served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953, serving in the Signal Corp.

He married Joan Hanke March 4, 1956, in Waukon. He was a life-long farmer in the Homestead area, specializing in dairy farming. He took great pride in having a Century Farm.

He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Homestead, where he served as a church trustee for two terms. He was also a member of the Marengo American Legion.

He enjoyed fishing, dancing, roller skating, music (he could even yodel) and spending time with his family.

Hopp is survived by his wife, Joan, Homestead; five children, Gary M. and Carol Hopp, West Amana; Terry and Steve Hegewald, Keota; Kim and Chuck Brockmann, Long Grove; Gregg Hopp, Victor, and Derek Hopp, Williamsburg, and seven grandchildren, Nathan and Crystal Hopp, Brittany and Matthew Petz, Avery Hopp and Aaron and Amber Gerard.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Gilbert Hopp and Willard Hopp.
