Funeral services for Sylvia D. Purdin, 93, formerly of Eddyville, were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, at the Eddyville United Methodist Church. She died Aug. 12, 2012, at the home of her son in Marengo.

The Rev. Jason Gutzmer officiated at the service.

Burial was in Cedar Township Cemetery, Fremont.

Memorials may be made to the Eddyville Historical Society.

Sylvia Deloris Purdin was born Oct. 7, 1918, in Coalfield, the daughter of Charles and Cecil (Smith) Williams.

She married Edwin L. Purdin Sr. in October 1936 in Unionville, Mo. The couple were blessed with 53 years of marriage and five children, Don, Jerry, Mary, Edward and Sandra. Her husband died Dec. 23, 1990.

She was a homemaker and had worked during World War II at the chicken factory. She also worked at the overall factory, Don Francis Grocery Store, several nursing homes and at Saul’s, Oskaloosa.

She was a member of the Eddyville Methodist Church and the Red Cross. She was a good samaritan to all shut-ins in the community and was very devoted to her grandchildren. She was a grandma and aunt to many.

Purdin is survived by four children, Jerry L. and Judy Purdin, Marengo; Mary Bunnel and Edward L. Jr. and Robbie Purdin, all Orlando, Fla., and Sandra and Fried Heyn, Costa Mesa, Calif.; 13 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, 29 great-great-grandchildren and seven great-great-great-grandchildren and one sister, Janice Middleton, Corrigan.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Donald Eugene Williams; five brothers, Gilbert, Dale, Lester Rich and Glenny, and one sister, Lena.
