Stephen Lynn Vaughn, 61, died Saturday, July 21, 2012, at home with his wife Theresa and son Wes at his side.

Memorials may be made to the West Michican Cancer Center, Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan or the Van Buren District Library System.

He ws born Aug. 25, 1950, in Kirksville, Mo., the son of George and Velma Vaughn. He earned his bachelor of science social science degree in 1972 and his master of arts in counseling and guidance in 1973 from Northeast Missouri State University, Kirksville, Mo. He was a guidance counselor in Lone Tree from 1973 to 1976; Iowa Valley Public Schools, Marengo, 1976 to 1986; Baker High School, Baker, Mont., 1986 to 2002, and was an at-risk instructor from 2002-2003 in Greenville, Mich. At the time of his death, he had been the guidance counselor at Lawrence Public School since 2003.

During his years as a counselor, he became certified in neuro-linguistic programming and hypnotherapy and obtained certifications in many other aspects of counseling. Publications by Steve were a book review, “Meta-States,” published in “Anchor Point” magazine, “Peers,” an unpublished curriculum/facilitators manual for a peer counseling class sold to a number of Montana schools and “School Success,” a curriculum developed for the Greenville Middle School program for students at risk of retention. He was presenter of many professional training workshops and adult education classes in the state of Montana.

He enjoyed golf and was proud to say he made two holes-in-one, reading, chess, traveling and tennis. He was an assistant tennis coach for many years in Baker, Mont.

Aug. 18, 1972, he married the love of his life, Theresa Chacey, in Ollie. To this union was born a son Wes (Sandy).

In additon to his wife and son, he is survived by his mother, Velma Vaughn, Green City, Mo.; one sister, Valerie and Bert Johnson and son Jacob, Kirksville; in-laws, Clair and Dorothy Chacey, Allegan, Mich.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Dennis and Jeanine Johnson, Allegan; Ron and LeighAnn Chacey, Racine, Wis., and Gary and Anna Chacey, Rio Rancho, N.M., and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father; a younger sister, Beverly, and a brother-in-law, Pete Arambasick.
