WELLMAN: Velma Mae BENDER, 85, of Wellman, died Wednesday, Sept 24, 2003, at Parkview Manor in Wellman, following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 27, at Wellman Mennonite Church in Wellman, with the Rev. Marvin HOSTETLER and the Rev. Herb YODER officiating.

Mrs. BENDER was born on Thursday, March 14, 1918 in Iowa County near Wellman to Albert and Leah Maude [YODER] ZOOK. On Aug. 22, 1940, she married Neil H. BENDER in Kalona.[SUBMITTER'S NOTE: Neil was son of Henry, grandson of Gideon, great grandson of Christian. Gideon would have been a great uncle of mine but I do not recall knowing this family.]

Mrs. BENDER attended rural schools in the Wellman community all of her life. She worked for Maplecrest Turkey Plant and Owens Brush. She was a member of Wellman Mennonite church and she volunteered at Parkview Manor. She enjoyed gardening and flowers.

Mrs. BENDER is survived by five children, Douglas BENDER of Willard,MO, Patricia Bender of Iowa City, Carl Bender ad wife Pam of Wellman, Loran BENDER of Cedar Rapids, and Mel BENDER and wife Jan of Kalona; eight grandchldren and one sister, Elsie BLOSSER and husband Eugene of Wellman.

Mrs. BENDER was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Floyd Zook, and Allen Zook.
