Funeral services for John D. “Jack” Rowland, 98, Marengo, were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 25, at First Presbyterian Church, Marengo. He died Tuesday, May 22, 2012, at Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo.

The Rev. Gerald Rife officiated at the service.

Burial was in Marengo Cemetery with military honors.

Memorials may be made to Marengo Memorial Hospital.

John David “Jack” Rowland was born April 29, 1914, in San Jose, Calif., the son of Lincoln and Laura Gode Rowland. He attended San Jose schools through the eleventh grade. The family moved to Marengo and he attended Marengo High School for his senior year, graduating in 1933.

He married Betty Jane Scott June 14, 1941, in Marengo. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a member of the 463rd Fighter Squadron. This unit remained close and he attended many reunions over the years.

When he returned to Marengo, he went to work at Quaker Oats for over 40 years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Marengo; Marengo American Legion Post 76 and a past member of the Marengo Golf Club.

Rowland is survived by one son and his wife, John Jr. and Jane, Jefferson; two grandchildren, Amy Lawton and husband Todd, Dallas Center, and Kara Fogarty, Granger; four great-grandchildren, Drew and Nic Lawton and Dillon and Kolby Fogarty, and a special friend, Maggie Kirby, Marengo.

He was preceded in death by his wife, in 1997; his parents and one brother, William “Bill” Rowland.
