Memorial services for Michael R. White, 65, Newton, formerly of Washington, were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 20, at St. Mary’s Parish Hall, Williamsburg. He died Monday evening, May 14, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center, Des Moines, from complications of multiple myeloma.

Deacon Dave O’Brien officiated at the service.

A memorial fund has been established.

Michael Robert White was born April 18, 1947, in Washington, the son of Roscoe and Eunice (Clingman) White. He graduated from Pekin High School in 1965 and from William Penn College in 1969.

He married Karolyn Greeson June 3, 1967. They later divorced.

He married Marsha Aug. 30, 2003, in Linby. They resided in Newton.

He was a teacher and coach for many years at Washington High School. As head track coach, the girl’s relay team set a record at the state meet which still stands today. He later owned and operated Mike White Builders and White’s Country Greenhouse in Washington. He continued his education at the University of Iowa, received his masters and doctorate degrees in special education while working at Mid Prairie. Most recently, he was a special education consultant for the Heartland Area Education Agency.

He was a talented musician and was a member of a band called the “Troubadors.” He was always an advocate for youth and will be remembered by those students whose lives he inspired. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed birds. He was a fan of car racing, bull-riding, the Raiders and the Yankees. He had a wonderful sense of humor. Above all else, he loved his family and he cherished the time he spent with them.

White is survived by his wife, Marsha (Stahl Driscoll); his children and their spouses, Wendi White and Alan Warholoski, Leadville, Colo.; Jeff White, Sebastopol, Calif.; Amy and Mike Pitt, Duvall, Wash.; Carisa Driscoll and Jeff Scieszinski, Des Moines; Larry and Leah Driscoll, South English; Cameron and Stacey Driscoll, Iowa City, and Keelan and Mindy Driscoll, Williamsburg; 10 grandchildren, C.J. White, Isabella Warholoski, Spencer and Zada Pitt, Victoria, Elleh and Keely Driscoll, Adi and Chloe Driscoll and Albi, and one sister and her husband, Mary and Gerry Maxwell, North Liberty.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Stephen, and one sister, Susan, in infancy.
