Memorial services for Irene Maxa, 87, Garland, Texas, formerly of Conroy, were held Wednesday, May 16. She died Sunday, May 13, 2012, at Baylor Medical Center, Garland, following a sudden illness.

A memorial service will be held this summer at Gay and Ciha Funeral Home, Iowa City.

Irene Violet Maxa was born April 27, 1925, in Swisher, the oldest child of Leo and Ethel Schropp Vanourney. She attended Swisher elementary school and Cedar Rapids Roosevelt High School, class of 1944.

She married Guy Joseph Maxa May 5, 1946. She was a loving wife and beloved mother. Her Iowa gardends were huge and provided potatoes and canned vegetables to last year-round. Later, she worked at the Crest Motel, Williamsburg, for a little spending money.

She spent her retirement in Texas taking care of her dogs and flower beds.

Maxa is survived by two sons and their wives, Gene and Sue Maxa, Sachse, Texas, and Terry and Kakayla Maxa, Garland; two daughters, Cindy and Jan Maxa, both Garland; six grandchildren, Brian, Mark, Matt, Amanda, Joseph and Jeremy, and seven great-grandchildren, Lacey, Jake, Samantha, Brett, Blane, Mylo and Oscar.

Irene V. Maxa , 87, died at Baylor Medical Center in Garland, Texas, on Sunday, May 13, 2012, following a sudden illness.

Memorial services in this area will be held on Tuesday, July 3, at 10 a.m. at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City, with burial to follow at Blaine Cemetery near Swisher. Memorial services were held Wednesday, May 16, in Garland, Texas.
