Mass of Christian burial for Paul J. Monaghan, 82, Mt. Vernon, formerly of Marengo, was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 24, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo. He died Tuesday, July 20, 2010, at the Hallmark Care Center, Mt. Vernon.

The Rev. Joseph Roost officiated at the service.

Burial was in St. Patrick’s Litte Creek Cemetery, rural Kinross.

Memorials may be made to the Iowa Chapter of the American Parkinson’s Disease Association, 1200 Pleasant St., E-524, Des Moines, Iowa 50309.

Paul Joseph Monaghan was born May 7, 1928, in Kinross, the son of James and Regina Conrad Monaghan. He graduated from Kinross High School in 1946 and served in the U.S. Army for two years during the Korean Conflict.

He married Mary Marlene Zuber-Erue Dec. 28, 1971, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo. He farmed for many years and then the couple owned and operated the Marengo Variety Store.

He enjoyed woodworking and carving. He loved to travel and spend time with his grandchildren. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo, and previously was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, North English. He had also served on the Little Creek Cemetery Board.

Monaghan is survived by three daughters and their husbands, Mary Kay and Terry Harris, Lisbon; Pamela Jean Roe and Gene Sutter, Goodyear, Ariz., and Lisa Ann and Duane Greve, Kimballton; nine grandchildren and their spouses, Toni and Chad Wiesenhofer, Mt. Vernon; Adam and Lucinda Harris, Keystone; Christopher and Jen Gorsh, Harper; Zachary and Teri Gorsh, North English; Victoria and Kurt Hansen, Walnut; Spencer Greve, Kimballton; Heath Greve, Omaha, Neb.; Annie Greve and Joey Inman, Exira, and John Roe, Cedar Rapids, and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, in 1997; his parents; one brother, Ronald, and one sister, Mary Phyllis Monaghan.
