Funeral Mass for Rachael M. Sherman, 96, Marengo, was held Wednesday, Feb. 16, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo. She died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011, at her home.

The Rev. Joseph Roost officiated at the service.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Marengo.

Memorials may be made to St. Patrick Catholic Church or the Altar and Rosary Society.

Rachael Mary Sherman was born Dec. 14, 1914, in rural Keokuk County, the daughter of George and Ida Van Dee Harris. She graduated from Webster High School in 1932.

She married Kermit Kyle Sherman Nov. 9, 1935, in Iowa City. She was a wife, mother and homemaker. She was a Girl Scout leader for 15 years. She loved cooking dinners for her family, gardening, needlework and playing bridge.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo, and the Altar and Rosary Society. She was also a member of the Iowa County Historical Society, the Ingleside Club, the Marengo Garden Club and the Marengo Golf Club.

Sherman is survived by her children and their spouses, Melvin and Dorcas Sherman, Robins; Constance and Gary Weichers, Horseshoe Bend, Ark., and Jeff and Laurie Sherman, Marengo; eight grandchildren, Curt Hansel, Dan and Brad Sherman, Cyndi Sullivan, and Rian, Chad, Aaron and Jeffrey Sherman; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one brother and his wife, Duane and Helen Harris, Des Moines, and one sister and her husband, Lois and Alvin Weber, Sigourney.

She was preceded in death by her husband, in 1978; her parents; two brothers, William “Bill” and Maurice Harris and one sister, Theresa Lansing.
