Celebration of life service for Sybil S. Puls, 76, Grinnell, was held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 31, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Malcom. She died Monday, Dec. 27, 2010, at Windsor Manor, Grinnell.

The Rev. Kathryn Roys, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Grinnell, officiated at the service.

Burial was in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Malcom.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, D.C. 20090-6011.

Sybil Shirley Puls was born Oct. 8, 1934, in Malcom, the daughter of Price Shaw and Sylvia Dykes. She was raised in Malcom and graduated as valedictorian of the class of 1952 from Malcom High School.

She married James Puls Sr. Aug. 13, 1952, at Trinity Lutheran Church north of Malcom. The couple lived on the family farm north of Malcom until 1989, when they moved to the Porter Edition south of Grinnell. Following the death of her husband on Nov. 27, 1994, she moved to Grinnell.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the Grinnell Eagles Auxiliary, Malcom Legion Auxiliary and a 43-year member of the Grinnell Women’s Bowling League. She was an excellent cook and an immaculate housekeeper.

She dearly loved her family, especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed golfing, bowling, watching Iowa Hawkeyes basketball games on TV, canning vegetables from her garden and listening to country western music.

Puls is survived by three sons and their wives, James Jr. and Marcia Puls, Dale and Cathy Puls and Gary Puls, all Grinnell; two daughters and their husbands, Shirley and Reed Hoeppner, Marengo, and Linda and Dan Baumgartner, Readlyn; seven grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Mertie Kinnaird, East Dubuque, Ill., and one brother, Preston Shaw, Malcom.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Bill Shaw, and her special friend, Ray Clifton.
