Funeral services for LuVerne F. McCallister, 80, Ottawa, Ill., formerly of Williamsburg, were held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 28, at First United Methodist Church, Ottawa. He died Thursday, March 24, 2011, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, Peoria, Ill.

The Rev. Donna Trinko, pastor of Evangelical United Methodist Church, officiated at the service.

Burial was in Oakwood Memorial Park with full military rites. Pallbearers were Charles Wolven, Matthew Mason, Dennis Day, David Neurohr and Steven and Michael Dorman.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, Ottawa.

LuVerne McCallister was born April 13, 1930, in Williamsburg, the son of Frank and Gladys (Smakel) McCallister. He was a 1947 graduate of Williamsburg High School.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in ceramic engineering at Iowa State University, Ames, in 1951. He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1954 on the USS Douglas A. Munro, during the Korean Conflict.

He was employed at Libby-Owens-Ford for 35 years, retiring as superintendent of Plant 5.

He married Joanne H. Dorman Feb. 6, 1955, at Grace United Methodist Church, Spencer.

He was a 55-year member of First United Methodist Church, Ottawa, where he served at various times as chairman of the church council, the trustees and the finance and pastor-parish committees. He served as a volunteer for the Ottawa Regional Hospital Care-A-Van, president of the Kiwanis Golden – K Club of Ottawa and served on the board of the Salvation Army.

McCallister is survived by his wife; one daughter, Lorraine McCallister, Prophetstown, Ill.; one son and his wife, David and Loretta McCallister, Roselle, Ill.; three grandchildren, Madison, Francesa and Trey, and his aunt, Dolores Hall, Bristol, R.I.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Darlene, at birth.
