Funeral services for Evelyn M. Icenbice, 89, Deep River, were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 30, at the Christian Church, Deep River. She died Saturday, March 26, 2011, at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City.

Inurnment will be held privately at a later date in the Goldenrod Cemetery, Deep River.

A memorial fund has been established.

Holland-Coble Funeral Home, Montezuma, was in charge of arrangements.

Evelyn Marcene Icenbice was born Aug. 24, 1921, on the Rempp family farm east of Montezuma, the daughter of Frank and Ethel Rempp Bruns. She attended rural school and schools and Montezuma and Barnes City and graduated from Deep River High School in 1939. She attended William Penn College, Oskaloosa, and taught rural schools for three years.

She married Kenneth Lowell Icenbice March 22, 1941, in Lancaster, Mo. The couple lived on the Eliza Weiss farm and farmed it for 13 years, until moving to the home place in 1954.

Following her husband’s death in 1962, she and her family moved into Deep River and she started working for the U.S. Postal Service as a clerk in September 1963. In 1972 she assumed the duties of Officer In Charge at the Millersburg Post Office and became Postmaster in 1973. Nov. 1, 1978, she became Postmaster in Deep River.

She was an active member in the Christian Church (Disciples) at Deep River. She was a member of the Mayflower Chapter 244 OES, served as Worth Matron in 1957, served as organist for 24 years and served as Grand Warder in Iowa Grand Chapter OES in 1980. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 296, Deep River.

Icenbice is survived by four children and their spouses, Larry and Linda Icenbice, Greenfield; Richard and Pat Icenbice, Deep River; Alana and Dennis Meyer, Deep River, and Kenneth Jr. and Cheryl Icenbice, Virginia Beach, Va.; nine grandchildren and their spouses, Lori and Jeff Bogart, Lisa and Todd Lamb, Leslie and Bobby Russell, Keith and Joni Icenbice, Nancy and Tom Voss, Angela and Bill George, Monica Meyer and Todd Wali, Erin Icenbice and Justin Hankins, Matthew Icenbice and Cory Lynn Trask; 14 great-grandchildren Bryce Bogart, Lindsey Bogart, Jackson Lamb, Spencer Lamb, Whitney Lamb, Megan Russell, Nathan Russell, Mallory Evelyn Russell, Zachary Voss, Rylee Voss, Jorie Icenbice, Tanner Icenbice, Syd George and Joe George.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one granddaughter, Danielle Meyer, and four brothers, William, John Ray, Paul and Wayne Bruns.
