Funeral Mass for Kathryn Shannahan, 84, Williamsburg, was held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 9, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Williamsburg. She died Sunday, March 6, 2011, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.

The Rev. Joseph Roost officiated at the service. Burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Williamsburg. A memorial fund has been established.

Kathryn Shannahan was born Oct. 18, 1926, in Parnell, the daughter of Hugh F. and Teresa A. Ford Gallagher. She attended the Boyle Green Elementary School in Holbrook and graduated from Parnell High School in 1944.

She married Joseph Shannahan May 10, 1949, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids.

In addition to being a wife, mother and homemaker, she co-owned and operated Joe’s Tavern for 22 years. She also worked as a clerk at the Amana Holiday Inn for 20 years and was employed at Sport Hill Country Club for four years.

She received many awards for her devoted volunteerism. She received the Department of Iowa Ladies Auxiliary Volunteer of the Year in 2008, the Sharon Olson Award-Hospice Volunteer of the Year and the Governor’s Award for Volunteering. She also did volunteer work for the VA Hospital in Iowa City.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society, the Iburg-Poulson VFW Auxiliary 8797, Hospice of Compassion and the Care Review Commission. She was active with the Iowa County Food Bank and also the L.O.V.E. Network.

Shannahan is survived by her husband of 61 years, Joe; three daughters and their husbands, Sandy and Jim Weldon, Oxford; Marcy and Kent Wardenburg, Williamsburg, and Julie and Dan Corman, Broomfield, Colo.; eight grandchildren and their spouses, Aimee and Gary Pitlick, Oxford; Allison Weldon, North Liberty; Andy Weldon, Oxford; Tony and Kristi Wardenburg, Littleton, Colo.; Kelly and Chris Vesey, West Des Moines; Shannan Corman, Arvada, Colo.; Ryan Corman, Durango, Colo., and Ashandra Corman, Broomfield; 11 great-grandchildren, Katie, Kyle, Tess and Taylor Pitlick, Addison and Jack Weldon, Brody and RosieLu Wardenburg, Gavin and Landon Vesey and Madison Corman.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Teri Shannahan; one granddaughter, Tara Wardenburg; three brothers, Earl, Hubert and Joseph Gallagher, and four sisters, Mary Agnes Kinney, Anna Gallagher, Rose Mae Gallagher and Mary Jane Steffen.
