Funeral services for Mary J. Peterson, 86, West Amana, were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 3, at the Brooks United Methodist Church, Brooks. She died Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010, at Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo, following an extended illness.

The Rev. Larry Buswell officiated at the service.

Burial was in the Brooks Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Brooks United Methodist Church.

Mary Joyce Peterson was born Oct. 6, 1924, in Rockwell City, the daughter of Erwin Rees and Leila Maria Hanna Miller. She attended the Adams County schools and graduated from Corning High School in 1942.

She married Roger L. Peterson June 24, 1947, in Corning. The couple farmed in Adams County until 2002.

She taught school in the rural schools for five years. She was a homemaker, wife and mother. She enjoyed gardening, bird watching and sky watching.

Peterson is survived by her children and their spouses, Mary Jean Parvin, Marengo; Roger Rees and Teresa Peterson, Des Moines; Anne Maria and Pete Hotovec, Urbandale, and Laura Lynn and Jeff Hoss, Des Moines; four grandchildren and their spouses, Heather Jean and Mike Haines, Sigourney; Kelly Anne and Tyler Turner, Williamsburg; Reilly Rees and Michelle Peterson, Des Moines, and Tana Rae Peterson, Des Moines; five great-grandchildren, Denny Haines, Dustin Haines, Marissa Ortega, Hayden Smith and Drew Turner.

She was preceded in death by her husband, March 28, 2010; her parents; one sister, Ruth; one brother, Max, and one grandson, Bradley.
