Funeral services for Elmer W. Von Ahsen, 87, Blairstown, were held Thursday, Dec. 30, at Grace Lutheran Church, Blairstown. He died Monday, Dec. 27, 2010, at the Keystone Nursing Care Center, Keystone, following an extended illness.

Burial was in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Blairstown, with graveside military rites by the M.J. Kirby American Legion Post 170, Blairstown, and the Iowa Military Funeral Honors.

Elmer W. Von Ahsen was born Aug. 18, 1923, in Williamsburg, the son of Henry and Frieda (Huedepohl) Von Ahsen. During World War II, he served his nation in the U.S. Navy.

He married Norma Hagen Aug. 31, 1947, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Conroy. She preceded him in death in 2005.

He farmed in Iowa and Benton counties and retired in 1987 before moving to Blairstown. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, where he loved playing dart ball, and the M.J. Kirby American Legion Post, Blairstown. He loved playing cards and traveling through the countryside.

Von Ahsen is survived by his daughters, Jeanette Von Ahsen, Belle Plaine, and Jolene Von Ahsen, Keystone; one grandson, Justin Von Ahsen, Belle Plaine, and two sisters-in-law, Esther Von Ahsen, Newhall, and Laverna Von Ahsen, Conroy.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, including one in infancy, and Henry, Erwin, Edgar and Art Von Ahsen.
