Williamsburgh Journal, Williamsburgh (Iowa Co), Iowa, 29 July 1887, p3.

Sickness and death have spread a dark mantle of sorrow over this community during the last two weeks. Death under all circumstances is a terrible monster, that steals our best loved ones away, so silently that ere we are aware of his presence he kisses down our eyelids forever. The two funerals from the residence of Dr. J.E. Jones, has been followed by the critical illness of another one of their children, but although life and death seemed evenly balanced in the scale for days, we are pleased to note that little Kirk is improving, and will probably get well.

At the residence or John R Evans one mile east of the city, sickness and death has brought sorrow and sadness. Mrs. Evans, (mother of Mrs. J.E. Jones, D.E., W.R. and J.R. Evans) has been very near the boundary line that separates time and eternity, during the past week, and is no better at this writing, her recovery being very doubtful. Mrs. Evans was one of the first settlers in this part of Iowa, a noble christain lady idolized by her children and grandchildren, and held in the highest esteem by her large circle of acquaintances. Every wish and prayer is for her restoration to health again, and everything that medical science or loving friends can do is being done for her.

There is also another cloud of the deepest sorrow, hanging over this home, Alfred, a bright boy, son of John R. and Mary Evans, aged about seven, took sick about the same time that his grandmother did and Wednesday his guileless spirit passed the river called death and parents and other friends were left almost overwhelmed with sorrow. Thursday loving and sympathizing friends and neighbors attended the funeral, quietly so as not to break the sad news to grandma Evans, in her feeble condition, the procession wended their way to the cemetery, where amid tears the little body was laid in the tomb, to sleep on until the first and glorious resurrection. There is still another one of Mr. Evans' children very sick, but hopes are entertained of its recovery.

There two most worthy families, and other relatives have the heart-felt sympathy of the entire city and community.
