P.J. Donohoe, life long resident of Holbrook, died at the University hospital in Iowa city, Fri, Feb 4, at 10 am. He had been ill since Oct and was brought to the hospital about a month before in the hope that relief for his ailment might be obtained. He was seventy years old.
Funeral services were held at St. Michaels at Holbrook at 10 am Mon morning, where Monsignor C.J. Donohoe of Davenport, brother of the deceased, celebrated a Requiem High Mass.
Other officers of the mass were Deacon, Rev T. C. Donohue of Grinell; Sub-Deacon, Rev. L.M. Boyle of Buffalo; Master of Ceremonies, Rev. John Cash of Parnell; Assistant master of ceremonies, Rev. John Manning of Holbrook.
Present at the mass and participating in the service was the Most Reverend Bishop H.P. Rohlman, bishop of the Davenport diocese who gave final blessings and absolution at the church and at the grave.
Monsignor William L. Hannon of Muscatine, life long friend of the deceased, paid final tribute to Mr. Donohoe in a sermon most fitting.
Present in the sacristy were the following priests: Rev. E.F. Gaule of Fairfield, Rev. N.F. Pfeiffer of Muscatine, Rev. Thomas O'Dowd of Williamsburg, Rev. James Welsh of Melrose, Rev. W.E. Carroll, Marengo, Rev. P.J. O'Reilly of St. Patricks parish of Iowa City, Rev. P.J. Ryan of Oxford, Rev. J.J. Collins of Hills, Rev. Gaule and Rev. Pfeiffer served Bishop Rohlmann as chaplains.
A choir selected from St. Ambrose college under the direction of Rev. Father Cletus Madsen sang the responses and provided the sacred music.
Honorary pall-bearers selected from close friends and long time associates of the deceased included the following: James Shannahan, Howard Nicholas, Judge James P. Gaffney, J.P. Gallagher and O.E. Jones all of Williamsburg; W.J. Hannon, Ed Hannon and T.M. Donohoe of Holbrook; E.T. Davis, James Kelly, Thomas Farrell and Judge Harold D. Evans of Iowa City; William Burns of Tiffin; James McCune and C.J. Lawler of Parnell; D.E. Driscoll of Cedar Rapids and W.H. Cooper of Hedrick.
Active pall-bearers were made up of nephews of the deceased and included the following: Leo Donohoe, Lourde Donohoe and Dick Donohoe of Davenport; Charles Donohoe of Iowa City, William Cash of Williamsburg, Daniel Cash of Mr. Pleasant, Joe Donohoe of Cosgrove and William Cooney of Marengo. Interment was made in St. Michael's cemetery.
The service throughout was marked with a solemnity and reverence in perfect harmony with the life practices of Mr. Donohoe, whose career was marked by exemplifications of the virture of faith, hope and charity. The final rites of the church were fittingly accorded a Catholic gentleman in truth. Mr. Donohue was the son of James and Ellen Donohoe. He was born July 1, 1867 in a log cabin on a site close to the location of the present Holbrook home. He spent his entire life in this locality. He was married to Miss Catherine Cooney, Feb 3, 1891.
Surviving are the widow, two daughters, Mrs. W.P. Burns and Mrs. Agnes Casey of Iowa City; two sons, James J.Donohoe of Holbrook and Charles J. Donohoe of Iowa Falls; four brothers, Monsignor Charles Donohoe of St. Paul the Apostles parish at Davenport, Attourney T.A. Donohoe of Omaha, Neb, Dr. A.P. Donohoe, Davenport and Joseph Donohoe, Iiowa City; and one sister, Miss Nora Donohoe of Iowa City.
While Mr. Donohoe won fame and fortune and world recognition as a breeder and judge of Aberdeen Angus stock, his life was not alone the achievements of his hobbies. By his charity, thoughtfulness and consideration he made a niche for himself in the admiration of those with whom he came in contact.
In worldly affairs, Mr. Donohoe acquired fame through his activities in the promotion and development of some of the finest Aberdeen Angus herds the world has known. He was a breeder and a judge of cattle of this breed.
