Fred W. Schultz, age 89 years, 9 months and 10 days, passed away at the Watts hospital in Marengo, July 14, 1949 at 9 p. m. after an llness of almost four months.Mr. Schultz was born October-4, 1859 in Bach,Germany. He was the son of the late John and Marie Schultz. He was baptized in infancy, attended public schools, and
at the proper age taking his religious instruction, was confirmed and received into membership of the Lutheran church. In 1884 he came to America with relatives and settled in Iowa county. He married Marie Roggenlien on May 17, 1887 and lived on farms in Iowa county his entire married life. In 1888 he became one of the charter members of the Zion Reformed church, helping construct the present building. He remained a faithful member until his death.
Mr. Schultz was a man of good chacter and courage which he showed during the past months of his illness. Even though he suffered pain most of the time, he remained hopeful and always had a smile for everyone. He was a loyal, faithful and loving father and grandfather and was always friendly and kind to everyone. Since the death of his wife in January 1945 he had made his home with his children, spending the summer months on the farm with his son and daughter-in-law. He loved the outdoors and farm life and was always happy when he could be of help in the garden or do any of the smaller tasks that he was still able to do. He was strong and very active until his illness. He is survived by four children:Carl of near Millersburg, Mrs. Ed Koehn, Marengo, Mrs. Clate Gerard, Iowa City, and Mrs. William Schueler of Cedar Rapids. He also leaves to mourn his death, seventeen grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.He was preceded in death by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Alma Smith and two sons, John and Henry. Funeral services were held at the Hoover funeral home, Marengo, at 2 p. m. and at the Zion Evangelical and Reformed church at 3 p. m. Sunday, July 17,1949. Rev.Fred Weltge of Lone tree, had charge of the services in the absence, of the regular minister, Rev. E. Jasmann. Rev. Weltge read the 23rd and 90th Psalms and spoke
words of comfort from other portions of the Bible."In the Garden," "Some Day We'll Understand," and "Rock of Ages," were sung as duets by Arthur Lang and Mrs. Russell Davis, Mrs. Chas. Goettsch accompanied them at the piano.Flowers were cared for by Mrs. Henry Brown and Minnie Furler. Casket bearers were all grandsons, Ronald Koehn, Harold Koehn, Otis Schultz, Virgil Schultz, Dean Gerard and Leonard Smith.
Burial was in Zion's cemetery.
