Fred Gorsh was born in Bock,Mecklenberg, Strelitz, Germany on June 17, 1857. There he spent his childhood days and received his education. He emigrated in 1874 and spent eleven years with the Amana Colonies. He was married June 21, 1883 to Sophia Roggentine. They first lived on a farm near the county farm, then removed to west pilot. Twenty six years ago in March they purchased the home place in Pilot twp and have lived there until the time of his death. For the last sixteen years he was a sufferer more or less. On April 1st, he left his house in the morning remarking "I feel fine this morning" and made a business trip to Millersburg. While leading a horse through the street he suddenly fell dead of apoplexy. His sudden departure is mourned by his faithful wife, ten children, one brother, Henry, of Marengo: a sister in Red Wing, MN, and one step brother John Wichman, of this county, Washington twp. The names of the children who are residents of Iowa county are Frank Gorsch, Mrs C W Smith, George Gorsch, Mrs Morris, Florence, Rena, Minnie, Fred, Henry, Ella and Everett. There are also six grandchildren. About six hundred friends and relatives attended the funeral which took place on April 3rd at one pm. His pastor officiated in both german and english. His body was laid to rest in the cemetery of the German Ref. Zion's congregation of which Mr Gorsch had been a charter member. All the family belongs to the same congregation. Fred Gorsch was one of the staunch German emigrants who have done so much towards the developement of this western country. His memory will be long and highly respected. We extend sympathy to those in morning. In behalf of the family we desire to extend their heartfelt thanks to the many friends who have helped by their aid and sympathy in the dark hour of bereavement.
