VINTON: Dale G. Alpers, 83, died Wednesday, September 8, 2010, after a courageous battle with cancer, at Virginia Gay Nursing and Rehab in Vinton.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, September 11, 2010 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vinton with Rev. Clarke E. Frederick officiating. Interment will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton with Graveside Military Rites conducted by Geo. G. Luckey American Legion Post #57 of Vinton and Iowa Funeral Military Honors. Friends may call at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. 6th St., in Vinton, from 4 to 7 PM on Friday. In lieu of flowers, a Memorial Fund has been established for Geo. G. Luckey American Legion Post #57 of Vinton.

The son of John and Elta (Paulsen) Alpers, Dale was born on September 14, 1926 in rural Van Horne. Following his formal education, he worked with his father in the family business. In 1945 he joined the US Army and served his nation in the Pacific for two years during World War II.

He was honorably discharged on November 22, 1946 and returned home to marry Zella Hurst on July 31, 1947.

Dale and Zella recently celebrated sixty-three years of marriage having raised three sons.

Dale and Zella moved from Vinton to Williamsburg in 1964 where they lived until 1983 when Dale retired from Iowa Electric Light and Power Company. They returned to Vinton and traveled all over the continental United States working for the Laborers of Christ remodeling or building churches. Dale and Zella truly loved their RV traveling which let them meet and help others.

Dale was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. As a member of Geo. G. Luckey American Legion Post #57 of Vinton, Dale was honored as Legion Member of the Decade and truly enjoyed his trip as member of an Honor Flight to Washington DC to visit the World War II Memorial. In his leisure Dale enjoyed woodworking, fishing and fellowship at the 4th Street Diner.

In addition to his wife, Zella of Vinton, he is survived by his sons, Duane D. (Danielle) Alpers, of Windsor Heights; Drew D. (Sheryl) Alpers of Billings, MT; and Daryl D. Alpers, and girl friend, Colleen, of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren, with a set of twins on the way; and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Iona (Dick) Inman of Bettendorf; his brother, Mert (Claudette) Alpers of Vinton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Donald Alpers and his sisters, Leona Bunten and Helen Kusel.
