Funeral Services Held Saturday for Former Resident of Vicinity

Funeral services for Mr. John F. Slager were held on Saturday afternoon, October 12, at the Methodist church in Williamsburg, with the Rev Carl Wilson of Marengo and the local pastor, Rev. J.B. Pritchard, officiating. Mrs. Dean Stockton and Mrs. Lloyd Jones sang the hymns with Mrs. Ruth Jones as their accompanist. Interment was in Oak Hill cemetery at Williamsburg with the following serving as pallbearers: Oscar Misil, Harry Fiser, Frank McGivern and Fred Ritchie, all of Marengo and Earl Yearian and William Poulson of Williamsburg.

Mr. Slager was born December 27, 1884, in Pilot Township, a son of Anthony and Mary Slager. He was married to Hazel Figg on Jan. 3, 1917 at the home of his parents, and they made farming their occupation, living in the Marengo and Williamsburg vicinities. They moved to Center Point in February of 1945. Mr. Slager died at his home there Wednesday, October 9 after a lingering illness of the dread disease, cancer. He was patient and uncomplaining throughout, resigned to his affliction, and his unfailing good humor and cheerfulness prevailed to the end. His age was 61years, 9 months and 16 days.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife; two sons, Dale of High Amana and Carroll, with the US Army, stationed at Camp Campbell; one daughter, Mrs. LaVera Meyer of Cedar Rapids; two brothers, George of Victor and William of Williamsburg; and three sisters, Mrs. Estelle Klever, Mrs. Fred Klever and Miss Mary Slager of Williamsburg. One son, Eldon, was killed in action on April 8, 1944.

Mrs. Slager was a member of the Methodist church at Marengo and was affiliated with the IOOF.
