Page 1Death of Mrs. Conroy
Old Resident of Hilton passed Away After Long Illness.
Mrs. Ellen Conroy, wife of the late James Conroy, died at her home in Hilton township on Saturday, August 15th, in the 84th year of her age. The funeral services were held in St. Patrick's church, Marengo on Monday at ten o'clock and the solemn high Mass was celebrated by Father Carroll, with Father Hannon, of Grinnell, as deacon, and Father Brown, of Brooklyn, as sub-deacon.
The church was filled with the large concourse of relatives, friends and neighbors of the deceased. The sermon was preached by Father Carroll and in this was paid a glowing eulogy on the life of the good woman whose Christian virtues and noble qualities were known and loved by all.
The interment was in Calvary Cemetery beside the body of the husband who died nine months ago. The pall bearers were: Michael White, M. Moynihan, John Mahan, Thomas Mahan, Bernard Donohoe and Frank Mulherin.
Ellen Sullivan was born in Pennsylvania eighty-three years ago. At an early age she moved to Ottawa, Ill., and it was here about sixty years ago she was united in marriage to Mr. James Conroy. In 1856 the couple came to Iowa and located in what is now Hilton township. Mr. Conroy died nine months ago and since then the faithful partner of his life had been in declining health.
Mrs. Conroy was the mother of eleven children, six sons and five daughters. Four of the daughters preceded the parents and the remaining children left to mourn are: Dr. Edward, Ogden, Utah, Dr. Hugh, Ottumwa, James, of Ottawa, Ill., Frank, John and Lucien, of the home, and Mrs. Robert Broughton, Berkley, California. All were present at the funeral and for the past several weeks the daughter was a constant attendant upon the mother.
Mrs. Conroy was a woman of exceptionally rugged character and to this was added a strong mentality and an active religious nature; she never shirked the responsibilities of the home and her love and solicitude for the family she bore were without limit. She was loved by her neighbors, and during a residence on the old homestead of nearly sixty years she was ever and always the same kind, thoughtful, Christian woman.
To the sorrowing children the sincerest condolences are extended by all.
