Gerald Dean Goodrich was born July 3, 1935 in rural Malcom, Poweshiek County, Iowa. He was the son of Virgil and Mary Van Tomme Goodrich. Gerald graduated from Brooklyn High School in 1953 and served in the U.S. Army for 2 years.

Gerald married Mercedes Therese Cibula on August 16, 1958 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Tama. The couple later moved to Marengo where he worked as a bricklayer. He started his own masonry business in 1966 which he operated for 37 years.

Gerald was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo, the Knights of Columbus, the Catholic Order of Forresters, and the Marengo American Legion Post #76. He enjoyed the “simple joys of life”: working, being with his family, watching sports, and being outdoors. He was an avid outdoorsman and spent many days afield. He pursued upland game, deer, and turkey. He hunted waterfowl and also enjoyed fishing. During many of these activities he was accompanied by his wife and sons. He also enjoyed raising and training German Short-haired Pointers.

Gerald is survived by his wife, Mercedes; four sons: Steven of Arvada, CO, Mark (Lana) of Pella, Kevin of Wallingford, and Scott (Shara) of Central City; three grandchildren: Wyatt of Fairhaven, VT, and Austin and Cole of Central City; two sisters: Alverda (Joe) Rhoads of Collins and Shirley (Gene) Bartachek of Brooklyn; a brother-in-law, Carroll Ternus; and a sister-in-law, Marlene Ternus. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Wayne.
