Alfred Klever, 72, Dies At University Hospitals

Services for Alfred F. Klever, 72, rural Williamsburg, were held at the Uhlmann funeral home, Williamsburg at 1:30 pm, Saturday, Sept 3. The Rev. Cheryl Wessels, First United Presbyterian Church, Williamsburg officiated.

Klever died at University Hospital, Iowa City, Wednesday evening, Aug. 31, 1983, following a short illness of cancer. He had been hospitalized one week.

For the service, Marilyn (Mrs. Myron) Heitman, rural Williamsburg, played an organ solo, “How Great Thou Art.”

Burial was in the Pilot Grove cemetery, Pilot Township, rural Williamsburg. Honorary casket bearers were Eldon Yearian, Dwight Gahring, Edgar Uhlmann, Fred White, Everette Joseph, C.H. Williams, Clarence Haack, Joseph Menary, George Stahl and Robert G. Roberts.

Active casket bearers were Harold and Rodney Joseph, Ronald Gahring, Harvey Huedepohl, Donald Lortz and Jerald McCaw. All casket bearers are from the Williamsburg area.

A public Masonic service was held Friday, Sept 2, at the Uhlmann Funeral home at 7:30 pm.

Alfred F. Klever was born June 6, 1911 in Pilot Township, Iowa County, southwest of Williamsburg, the son of Fred and Anna Slager Klever. He attended the Pilot Grove school through eighth grade and also the Williamsburg high school.

On Nov. 16, 1933, he was married to Leona K. Livingston at the Ohio Methodist church parsonage, rural Ladora, by the Rev. Spurlock. They lived in Williamsburg for four years where he owned and operated a trucking service.

Later they moved to the Klever farm when his parents retired and moved into Williamsburg. The Alfred Klevers continued to make their home there and he took an active part in community affairs.

He was a member of the Pilot Grove Methodist church and had been a member of the First United Presbyterian church, Williamsburg, for 30 years. He was a member of the Stellapolis Masonic lodge and for the last several years was a member of the local Kiwanis Club. For over 40 years he was sexton of the Pilot Grove cemetery.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Leona, are two sisters, Mabel (Mrs. Thomas J.) Jones, route two, Williamsburg and Mildred (Mrs. Paul) Sperry, Lisbon and a number of cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
