Effie Fant, 85, Dies After Having Stroke

Funeral services for Effie Fant, 85, Williamsburg, were held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Williamsburg, Wednesday, Dec. 28, at 10 am. The Rev. Anthony L. Conrad celebrated the Mass.

Mrs. Fant died at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, Saturday evening, Dec. 24, 1988, as the result of a stroke suffered at her home Thursday, Dec. 22.

Lector at the service was David Kozishek and altar boys were Conn and Morgan Hanson, all Williamsburg.

Organist was Dorothy (Mrs. John J.) Donahue. Soloist Renee (Mrs. Erle) Driscoll sang “How Great Thou Art.” Elaine (Mrs. Francis) Dillin sang “Ave Maria” and “Panis Angelicus.” The congregational hymn was “The Strife Is O’er, The Battle Won.” The musicians were all of Williamsburg.

Flower attendants were Agnes (Mrs. Delmar) Wetjen, Marengo and Connie (Mrs. Dale) Baack, Homestead. Ushers were Leo Driscoll and Williams Shannahan, both Williamsburg.

Burial was in the church cemetery. Casket bearers were William O’Meara, Chicago, Ill.; Delmar Wetjen, Marengo; and Harlan Heitman, Douglas Blythe, Robert L. Hanson and Myron Heitman, all Williamsburg. James Schwarting, Williamsburg, was an honorary casket bearer.

Effie Fant was born Feb. 21, 1903, in Pilot Township, Iowa County, near Williamsburg, the daughter of Albert and Mary Pitlick Hradek. She attended the rural schools in Pilot Township.

She married Carl Fant Oct. 1, 1924. They farmed west of Williamsburg until moving into Williamsburg in January 1930. They built their present home in 1965.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society and the Women’s Relief Corps, Williamsburg. She was a homemaker and seamstress and her hobbies were gardening and cooking.

Surviving are her husband Carl, a resident at the Williamsburg Care Center; one daughter, Irene Wetjen (Mrs. Hugh) O’Meara; two grandchildren, Sean and Mary Wetjen and a sister, Elenora (Mrs. James) Kozishek, all Williamsburg.

She was preceded in death by her parents, both of whom died in 1960.
