Mary “Mae” Zuber,

Williamsburg- Mary “Mae” Alta Zuber, was born March 27, 1911, in Williamsburg, Iowa, the daughter of Camil and Ines (Peirce) Vercande. Mae graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1930 and served as a domestic/secretary for renowned Dr. Arthur Steinler at the University of Iowa Medical School before marrying Esra Zuber of Conroy on March 28, 1932, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Williamsburg.

The Zubers were lifelong successful farmers in the Conroy, Williamsburg, and Marengo area until Esra’s untimely death in 1963. Mae continued her religious commitments at St. Mary’s Church while earning the Basic Nurses Aide designation at Kirkwood Community College. She served as a part-time nurses aide at the Yearian Nursing Home for 15 years. She eventually became a member of the Case Review Committee and a board member of the Federal Government Surplus Commodity Distribution for the Williamsburg area. She retired to the Walden Place in Iowa City in 1997.

Mae died on Sunday, March 21, 2010, at the Highland Ridge Care Center in Williamsburg, at the age of 98 years. She is survived by 4 sons; Harlan (Marilyn) Zuber of Williamsburg, IA, Verlyn (Mary) Zuber of Belle Plaine, IA, Sylvan Zuber of Cedar Rapids, IA, and Darrell Zuber of Salt Lake City, UT; a daughter-in-law Sylvia Zuber of Phoenix, AZ; 25 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren; a brother: Vernon Vercande of Marengo; 2 sisters: Jean Disterhoft of California and Lenora Benest of Cedar Rapids.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Esra; 2 daughters: Mary Marlene Erue Monaghan and Ailene Ann Long Northrup; a son: Jerome Zuber; 2 sisters: Irene Vercande and Anna Kruse; 2 brothers: Cloyd and Pat Vercande and 2 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

Funeral Mass will be 10:30 am on Friday, March 26, 2010 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Williamsburg, Iowa. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. There will be a prayer service at 6:45 pm Thursday.
