OBITUARY OF FRIEDREICH (FREDERICK) KANKE
Frederick, son of John Kanke, was born in Dammeretz Mecklenburg Germany, January 18, 1849, (note that other records indicate that Frederick was born in 1846, so 1849 would appear to be a typographical error) passing away at the home of his son John, in Van Horne, Iowa, April 6, 1926, at the advanced age of 80 years, two months and 18 days.

The deceased came to America with his parents when about 18 years of age and soon after began to work as an engineer at the Amana Colonies. This position he filled for some seven years.

In 1872 he was married to Dorothy Grimm and immediately settled with his bride on a farm south of Norway where they continue to live for many years, rearing their family. To this union were born 4 sons and 4 daughters. Two daughters died in infancy. The wife and mother preceded her husband in death October 9, 1891. The eldest son was killed by accident, January 18, 1921 and the eldest daughter passed away October 7 of the same year. Those surviving their parents are John, Mrs. Amanda Smith and William P. living in Van Horne while Fred lives but a short distance from Van Horne.
