Clarence Lloyd Kubichek, 91, of Blairstown, died Sunday, May 11, 2008, at Rose Haven Nursing Home in Marengo after a long illness. Memorial services: 3 p.m. Sunday, June 1, at First Presbyterian Church in Blairstown. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Survivors include his wife, Kathryn of Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo; a daughter, Carolyn Becker of Blairstown; a son, James of Jewell; and two brothers, Charles of Blairstown and Bud of Lisbon.

Also surviving are grandchildren, Roy John Becker Jr., James Becker, Hope Becker, Scott Becker, Adam Becker and Jenny Kubichek; and a great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Faye Kubichek; daughter-in-law, Jill Kubichek; and son-in-law, Roy Becker Sr.

Born Nov. 1, 1916, to James and Blanch (Bessie Serbousek) Kubichek, in Mount Vernon, Clarence graduated from the Blairstown Consolidated High School. He married Kathryn Scott on June 26, 1940, in Rushville, Neb. He served in the Navy Sea Bees during World War II; both before and after the war he worked for the REA. The family briefly lived in Vinton before moving to Blairstown and starting Kubichek Bros. Hardware.

Clarence was a longtime member of the Blairstown Fire Department, American Legion Kirby Post and First Presbyterian Church. He founded South Slope Saddle Society and was a former Cub Scoutmaster. In the late 1960s, he purchased a farm south of Blairstown. He enjoyed spending free time with his family and his horses and mules. His farm was the site of several threshing bees in the 1970s. Clarence retired from Kubichek Bros. Hardware after 32 years of service to the people of Blairstown and surrounding communities. The family requests no flowers.
