Williamsburg–Joe William Evans was born October 9, 1913 in South English, Iowa, the son of William Day and Mary Catherine (Moore) Evans. He graduated from South English High School. Joe was united in marriage to Esther Eilene Brower on September 30, 1934 in South English. Joe grew up in the South English area, has lived in Keswick, North English and moved to Williamsburg in 1941. He farmed, then later owned a trucking business and was a livestock Station Manager for Oscar Mayer for 30 years retiring in 1976.He established the Raider Drive In in Williamsburg. Joe was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Williamsburg, being active in a number of committee’s. He also was a member of the Williamsburg Fire Department where he had served as the fire chief, Masonic Stellapolis Lodge #391, El Kahir Shrine, Grand Lodge of Iowa, where he served in the offices of Grand Marshall1955-1956, Sr. Grand Warden 1960-1961 and Deputy Grand Master 1974-1975 and was a member of Kiwanis. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and being an active supporter of Williamsburg High School Music and Athletic Programs. Joe died Tuesday, May 27, 2008 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City after a brief illness at the age of 94 years. He is survived by his wife Esther of Williamsburg; four children: Mary (Dave) Melsa of Branson, Missouri, Gary (JoLynn) Evans of Afton, Minnesota, Peggy (Greg) Folkmann of Williamsburg and Jeffrey (Lisa) Evans of Middle Amana; 13 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister: Miram Reinwand , a brother: Warren Evans and a grandson: William Jeffrey Evans. A Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 am on Saturday, May 31, 2008, at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Rev. James Parks will officiate. Burial will be in the Brethren Cemetery near South English. Visitation will be on Friday from 4-7 PM with a Masonic Service at 7:00 PM. Memorials are for the St. Paul United Methodist Church or English River Church of the Brethren.
