Harlon M. Dehning, age 66 of Marengo, died Monday afternoon, May 19, 2008 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following an extended illness. Memorial Service: 10:30 A.M. Friday, May 23, 2008, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, IA, with Pastor Jackie Tjarks officiating. Inurnment will be in the Ladora Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Thursday May 22, 2008 at Kloster Funeral Home in Marengo. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be contributed to the Ladora Cemetery or Iowa City Hospice, Iowa City, Iowa.

Harlon is survived by his wife, Karen; a daughter, Lorie Slaymaker (Paul) of Tiffin and a son Greg Dehning of New Virginia; two grandchildren Daniel Slaymaker of Oxford and Adam Slaymaker of Vinton; two brothers Duane (Nancy) Dehning of Decorah and Ronald (Kathy) of Decorah; and many nieces and nephews.

Also surviving are three sister in laws Kate Hovden, Darlene (Dennis) Frana and LuAnn Smith, all of Decorah; two brother in laws Earl (Eileen) Smith of Hudson and Don (Joyce) Smith of Keosauqua; Special friends Rick (Kathy) Kahler of Marengo.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Harlon M. Dehning was born August 20, 1941 in Decorah, Iowa, the son of Harold and Eleanor Easton Dehning. He graduated from Decorah High School and then married Karen Smith on November 27, 1960 at Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church in Decorah. Harlon worked as a metal polisher for 35 years with Evergreen Packaging Company and later retired from there in December of 2000. Harlan enjoyed woodworking, camping, attending horse shows and loved his family, especially his grandchildren.
