Williamsburg–George “Scotty” Ahrens age 85 of Williamsburg and formerly of Marengo, died Monday, April 7, 2008 at his home in Williamsburg after a battle with Colon Cancer. Celebration of Life Service will be 11:00 am, Friday, April 11, 2008 at St . John Lutheran Church in Marengo. Pastor Doug Morton will officiate. Private family burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 3:00 to 7:00 at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. George was born January 26, 1923 in Conroy, Iowa, the son of Herman and Linda (Steinke) Ahrens. He graduated from Williamsburg High School. George served in the US Navy during WWII. He was united in marriage to Ruth L. Magill on September 1943 in Sand Point, Idaho. After marriage the couple resided in Marengo. George owned and operated Scotty’s Café in Marengo until his retirement. After retiring he kept busy be driving school bus and working at the Marengo Golf Course. George was a member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marengo, the American Legion and the Iburg Poulson VFW Post #8797. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs and the Iowa Hawkeyes. He is survived by a son: Gerald (Judy) Ahrens of Eatonton, GA; two daughters: Kay (Ed) Pundt of Homestead and Suzanne (Tom) Jones of Plano, TX; a sister: Lucille (John) Roberts of Des Moines; nine grandchildren: Jeff (Nicole) Ahrens, Jimmy Butcher, Chari Moore, Katherine Lewis, Sarah Pundt, Johanna Pundt, Matthew Pundt, Dan (Karin) Jones and Amy (Marc) Miller; nine great grandchildren. George was preceded in death by his parents and wife Ruth in 1983. Memorials are for Iowa City Hospice or the V.A. Medical Center in Iowa City. The family would encourage everyone to be proactive about scheduling a colonoscopy.
