LUZERNE: Charles Albert Hirsch, age 65, passed into eternal slumber on Friday, December 21, 2007 at his residence following an extended illness.

Funeral Services will be held at 1 PM, Saturday, December 29, 2007 at the Jesus Christ Of Later Day Saints Chapel in Belle Plaine with President Charles Hubble officiating. Interment will be held at the International Cemetery near Luzerne with Graveside Military Rites conducted by M. J. Kirby American Legion Post #170 of Blairstown. The family will receive friends from 11 AM until service time at the Chapel in Belle Plaine. Phillips Funeral Home in Keystone is in charge of arrangements.

Charles was born September 15, 1942 at Emmetsburg to Charles and Beverly (Dobson) Hirsch and attended Emmertsburg and Ruthven schools.

He joined the US Navy in 1959 and was retired in 1980. As a member of the Navy he had eight West Pac cruises and one tour on an inland Patrol Boat during the Vietnam War. Charles was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. and was a member of the M. J. Kirby American Legion Post #170 of Blairstown and the Tin Can Sailors. During this time he had six children with his first wife, Davalene P. Hirsch.

After retiring from the service he returned to Emmetsburg and joined the Emmetsburg Police Department. On August 19, 1980 he married Arleen Martin at Sioux Falls, SD and was the best stepfather he could be to Arleen's three children. Charles remained in law enforcement for ten years serving in Emmetsburg and Mt. Vernon as a Patrolman and as Police Chief in Rolfe and Victor and then retired to obtain an Associate Degree at Kirkwood Community College.

In 1991 he and his wife, Arleen, began a Custodial and Maintenance Co. at Tanger Factory Outlet in Williamsburg. In 2000 the couple retired due to failing health. He is survived by his wife of twenty-seven years, Arleen of Luzerne; his children, Debby Hirsch of San Diego, CA, Becky Hirsch of New Jersey, David Hirsch of Atlantic City, NJ, Charles Hirsch III of Belle Plaine and Jared (Shanna) Hirsch of the US Coast Guard stationed in Seattle, WA; his step-children, Amy (Pedro) Morales of Kansas City, Jim (Judy) Willey of Dayton, OH, and Heather Bass of Marengo; thirty-two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his brother, Randy (Ila)Hirsch of Des Moines, and his sister, Valerie (Charlie) Woods of Spencer.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Carole.
