Phyllis Marie Jones was born on May 10, 1922 in Iowa City, IA, the daughter of Lester and Hazel Stoner Jordan. She grew up near Millersburg and attended rural Hillside School. She was united in marriage to William Dale Jones on July 26, 1940 at her parents home near Millersburg. They farmed between Millersburg and Deep River until moving to North English in 1986. Dale preceded her in death in January 1992. Phyllis moved to Mayflower Homes in Grinnell in April 2000. Phyllis was a member of the North English United Methodist Church and later attended the United Church of Christ in Grinnell. She was also a member of the Heritage Society, the Community Club, the Grinnell Chamber of Commerce and had been an active volunteer at the North English Community Center. She loved to play cards and was an excellent cook. She also enjoyed the activities and playing games at Mayflower. Phyllis died on Saturday, March 1, 2008 at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center in Grinnell following a short illness. She lived 85 years, 9 months and 20 days. Phyllis is survived by a son Ronald (Jean) Jones of Grinnell, IA; a daughter Janice (Dr. Donald) Roller of Grinnell, IA; 12 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a daughter Virginia Koehn and husband Edwin, and a half brother Clarence Jordan. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English at 10:00 AM on Thursday, March 6, 2008. The Rev. John Epperson will officiate. Burial will be in the Bailey Cemetery near Keswick, IA. Visitation will be from 5 PM to 7 PM at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English on Wednesday, March 5, 2008. A memorial fund has been established for the American Heart Association.
