Congressman Rumple Dies at a Chicago Hospital.
Congressman J.N. Rumple passed away peacefully at St. Luke's Hospital at Chicago, last Saturday morning at 4 o'clock.
His wife and daughter were at his bedside when the end came.
Captain Rumple has been in Chicago since last June receiving treatment for cancer. At times he was hopeful, but for several weeks he realized that the end was near.

John Nicholas William Rumple was born near Fostoria, Ohio on March 4, 1841. He attended the public school in his neighborhood, but before his education was completed his family removed to Iowa and while Mr. Rumple was yet a young man he entered Westen College, then located in the village of Western, Linn county, about twenty miles northeast of Iowa City.
Then he entered the Normal Department of the State University and was a student here when the civil war broke out in 1861.
Mr. Rumple volunteered and in August 1861 found him a private in Company H, which afterwards was mustered into the regular service and became part of 2nd Iowa Cavalry until October 1865, when he was mustered out as captain of his company.
The regiment saw lots of service & Captain Rumple was constantly with it. He took part in the battle of Island No. IO., New Madrid, Siege of Corinth, Rienzi,Farmington, Igka, Tapelo, Franklin Columbia, Nashville, etc. He did service in front of Hood's advances on Nashville, etc. He did service in front of Hood's advance on Nashville and participated in Grierson's raid.
After the war, he entered the law office of H Martin of Marengo,Iowa and February, 1865 was admitted into the practice of law and he steadly engaged in his profession from that time until his death, all the time at Marengo, except a short period at Burlington.
He served as state senator from his district in the 14th, 15th, 16th, and 17th General Assembly.
For six years he was a member of the Board of Regents of the State University and was also curator of the State Historical Society.
He was prominent in business, municipal and educational affairs of his home city and served as mayor, member of city council, solicitor, member of the school board and many other minor positions.
The funeral was held at Marengo last Tuesday afternoon and was in charge of the masonic lodge.
There were a number of Friends of the deceased, from a distance who were in attendance.
