John Carl Rettig, 87, of Middle Amana died Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City from complications of Lymphoma. Funeral Services will be held 10:00 A.M. Friday, January 18, 2008 at the Middle Amana Church with Elder Jon Childers officiating. Burial will be in the Middle Amana Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-7 P.M. Thursday, January 17, 2008 at the Middle Amana Church. Memorials may be contributed to the Amana Church Society. Kloster Funeral Home in Marengo is in charge of arrangements.

He is survived by his wife Doris, two sons, Mark (Diana) Rettig of Cedar Rapids and David (Mary Lynn) Rettig of Middle Amana, and granddaughter Stephanie Rettig of Cedar Rapids. He is also survived by a sister, Florence (Walter) Schuerer of Amana.

He was preceded in death by his parents Carl and Louise Hegewald Rettig and a sister-in-law Helen June Graichen.

John was born January 23, 1920 in Middle Amana. He received his education in the Middle Amana School. Prior to World War II he worked at the Middle Farm, Middle Amana Woolen Mill and Middle Amana Bakery. He was inducted into U.S. Army on April 22, 1942 and served his country in North Africa and Italy. He married Doris Graichen on February 3, 1945 in Amana. Following World War II, he was employed by the Amana Society until 1966 and then by Quaker Oats until retirement in 1985. In retirement, he enjoyed part-time work at the Amana General Store, traveling, golf, fishing, dining out, driving around the Amana Colonies, and the University of Iowa athletics. Above all he was devoted to his family and cherished the times he spent with them. He was a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother who was greatly loved. He was a lifelong resident of Middle Amana and a member of the Amana Church Society.

The family would like to express their gratitude to all of John’s caregivers at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
