Conroy- On Friday the eleventh of January 2008, the Lord called to Himself, Harlan Arnold Maas. Harlan was born March 29, 1930, to Arnold G. and Ida J. (Baack) Maas on the family farm near South Amana. On the 27th of April 1930, he was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in Conroy, of which he remained a life long member. Harlan was confirmed at Trinity. On September 23, 1951, Harlan and Arlene Stichweh were united in marriage at Trinity Lutheran Church. The Lord blessed them with four children Michael, Stewart, Patricia and Phillip. Harlan served in the Armed Forces from 1953 to 1955. Harlan’s life was farming and he was a good steward of the land, which the Lord provided him to work. He was active at Trinity, he served as trustee, an elder and on the memorial committee. He also served as a school board member and on the LIS building program. Harlan enjoyed singing and sang in the church choir from high school to his last days. He was also a Farm Bureau member. Harlan and Arlene moved from the farm in 1982 and enjoyed living in Conroy surrounded by friends. He leaves to mourn: his wife Arlene; his children and families: Michael and Sandi, children Tyler and Kelsey of Mendota, IL; Stewart and Deb, children Jared and Conner of South Amana; Patricia of Conroy and Phillip and Tammy, children Tierney and Garrett; a brother Rev. Edward and Carol Maas of Edgewood NM; a sister-in-law Lucille Maas and son Douglas Maas of Williamsburg. He was preceded in death by parents Arnold and Ida Maas; a brother Richard; a beloved grandson Derek Maas; and his father and mother-in-law Henry and Susetta Stichweh. Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 am Monday, January 14, 2008, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Conroy. Pastor Gary Sears will officiate. Burial will be in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 2:00pm to 7:00pm at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Trinity Lutheran Church, the Lutheran Interparish School or Iowa City Hospice.
