Ronald L. Brecht, Sr. age 67, of Marengo, died Friday, December 7, 2007 at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, from complications of Diabetes. Mass of Christian Burial: 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, December 11, 2007, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo with Fr. Joseph Roost officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Monday, December 10, 2007 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo where a Scripture Service will be held at 7 P.M. In lieu of flowers memorials may be contributed to the American Diabetes Association or Cedar Rapids Oncology.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Sandra; a son Ronald, Jr. and fiancée Michelle Jordan of Norway; a daughter Della Cooney and husband Garth; five grandchildren, Hunter and Haley Brecht of Marengo, Chad Cooney and fiancée Kaylynn of Adel, Jason Cooney of Newton, and Sara Cooney of Cedar Rapids; two step-grandchildren, Brandon and Ashley Jordan of Norway, and a great granddaughter Addison Cooney of Adel. Also surviving is a sister Mary Ann Frimml of Marengo. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Daryl, Dean and Andrew and a sister Elvera Valenti.

Ronald LeRoy Brecht, Sr. was born February 14, 1940 in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Edward and Elva Knock Brecht. He attended the Marengo schools and married Sandra Cach on August 1, 1959 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. Ron was employed at Cherry Burrell for over 30 years and also farmed. During his lifetime, Ron operated several bars, among them Brecht’s Bar and Grill, Marengo, Triple R Bar and Grill in Watkins and Pamaron Bar and Grill in North Liberty. He also ran Brecht’s Bait and Tackle in Marengo for many years. Ron was an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoyed farming and the outdoors.
