Carl William Luers, age 91, of North English, formerly of Keota, died Monday, September 24, 2007, at the English Valley Care Center in North English, following a brief illness. Carl was born September 21, 1916, in rural Keota, to Herman and Matilda (Kracht) Luers and graduated from Keota High School. On October 10, 1940, he married Gwendolyn Grove at the Bethel United Methodist Church in rural Sigourney. The couple farmed in the Keota Community until retiring in 1992. Carl was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday School and was a member of the Methodist men’s group. He also had been a member of Farm Bureau since 1940. Carl enjoyed being involved with the church and farming. Survivors include five sons: Myron C. Luers and wife Sherry of Keota, Vernon Luers and wife Becky of Greenfield, David Luers and wife Lorie of Pierre, South Dakota, Rev. Charles Luers and wife Cherie of Ottumwa and Kevin Luers and wife Pam of Keota; 12 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; two step great grandchildren and two sisters: Pearl Mound of Keota and Marie Britten of Parnell. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Alma Turnipseed and Louise Giles and one brother: Albert Luers. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 27, 2007, at the Bethel United Methodist Church in rural Sigourney with Rev. John Hembry officiating. Burial will be at Bethel Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September, 26, 2007, at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where the family will be present from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for the Bethel Cemetery, Hospice of Keokuk County or the mission of your choice. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements.
