Dorothy Mae Gerard Holeton Olson, age 84, of Cedar Rapids and formerly of North English and Fairfax, died following a long illness on Monday, March 26, 2007 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 AM Friday, March 30, 2007 at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English with Pastor Ben Wilson officiating. Burial will be in the Community Cemetery, rural Deep River. Visitation will be from 4 pm to 8 pm Thursday, March 29th at the funeral home. Dorothy was born on December 1, 1922 in Iowa County, Iowa, the daughter of Issac Newton Franklin and Bessie Adella Lindsey Gerard. She grew up the Guernsey area and attended school there. Dorothy was united inmarriage to Byron Leslie Holeton on August 1, 1940 in Williamsburg, IA. They made their home in the North English and Fairfax communities. Byron preceded her in death in April 1988. She married Russell G. Olson on August 21, 1988. Russell died in November 1990. Dorothy was a member of the Eagles Club, the ABWA Triangle Chapter 64 and was Woman of the Year in 1986. She worked as a cook for a number of years at area cafe’s and Dairy Creams, Maid Rites, Eagles Club and had retired from Heartwood Children’s Home (Now Tanager Place) in Cedar Rapids. Dorothy also baked cakes for weddings, anniversaries and birthdays. She was known for her birthday character cakes, for which she had over 200 baking pans. She is survived by 4 daughters: Lois Adams (James) of Vinton, IA; Marlene Vail (Pete), Barb Campbell (Dick) & Karen Hazewinkel (Mike), all of Cedar Rapids; 14 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren; a son-in-law Gerald Dietze of Williamsburg, IA; brothers: Donald Gerard (Doris) of Cedar Rapids, IA; Melvin Gerard (Linda) of Naperville, IL; sisters: Doris Kerkove & Betty Jacobs (Bob) both of North English, IA; Velma Mayer of Dumas, TX and Joan Horning (Charles) of Keota, IA; She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, a daughter Cheryl Dietze, a son Leslie James Holeton, and a sister Opal Holeton.. A general memorial fund has been established.
