Wayne “Jack” Formanek, age 73, died Thursday, March 8, 2007 at his home, following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Monday, March 12, 2007, First United Methodist Church, Marengo with Rev. Jim Davis officiating. Burial will be in the Koszta Cemetery, rural Marengo with military honors. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Sunday, March 11, 2007 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.

He is survived by his wife, Gerry, a son Jeff Formanek of Cedar Rapids, 2 step-sons, Joel Smith and wife Sue of Belle Plaine, and Alan Smith of Houston, TX; a daughter, Kelly Formanek of Blanco, TX; 3 step daughters, Donna Montross and husband Larry of Winfield, IA, Vicki Tanke and husband Jim of Marengo, and Carrie Cummins and husband Chuck of Cedar Rapids; 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister Kayrol Spinney of Kansas City, MO. and several nieces and nephews. Besides his wife Erma, he was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Marjorie Bigbee.

Wayne Franklin “Jack” Formanek was born June 16, 1933 in Iowa County, Iowa, the son of Amos and Cara York Formanek. He received his education in the Iowa County schools and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. Jack was employed as a postal carrier for many years. He also farmed and worked at the county landfill. Jack married Erma Kern Smith on May 15, 1970 in Blairstown. She died on June 1, 2001. He married Gerry Quann Slaymaker on June 22, 2002 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marengo. The couple resided in rural Marengo. He was a member of the Marengo American Legion Post #76.
