Paul Refer, 49, of Victor, died October 14, 2006, at his home of natural causes. A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 20, at the Victor United Methodist Church with Pastor Jim Davis officiating. Organist will be Colleen Van Zee. Burial will be in Victor Memorial Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Victor United Methodist Church. The son of Everett and Carolyn Sikir Refer, he was born June 5, 1957, in Cedar Rapids. He was raised in Victor and was a 1975 graduate of H.L.V. High School. He attended Kirkwood Community College and completed a welding course. Paul made his home in Victor and was employed as a welder at several business’ including, Rhinehart, Inc. and T & L Fabrication in Victor, Miracle Recreation, Inc. in Grinnell, Kinze Manufacturing in Williamsburg, and later with Victor Manufacturing. Paul was a member of the Victor United Methodist Church where he was baptized and confirmed. He loved the outdoors, camping with his family, fishing and hunting. Throughout his school years Paul was very active in band and music programs. When he was in the 8th grade he was asked to play his cornet in the high school musical. His horn playing was always prominent during national anthems and other musical entertainment at sporting events. After graduation from high school, Paul was invited to join the Purdue University Band as they toured Europe over that summer. Paul was also an active vocalist and participated in the high school choral group and many musical productions. Paul's other love was the outdoors. He was an avid wildlife hunter, particularly pheasant, duck and turkey hunting. He also loved fishing and spent many summer afternoons fishing at local ponds and lakes. Later in life Paul took up camping and enjoyed weekend trips around Iowa campgrounds. Survivors include his mother, Carolyn of Victor, two children, Ambri Refer of Independence and Seth Refer of West Des Moines; one brother, Lynn of Glen Ellyn, Illinois and his two children, Quinn and Spencer; two aunts, Rosie Refer of Victor and Darlene Tiedemann of Blairstown; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Everett in 2003; three uncles, Don Refer, Renn Tiedemann, and Russell Hecht; and one aunt, Gladys Hecht.
