John W. Kempf, 76, of 2191 Chandler St. SW, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006, in St. Luke's Hospital from complications of surgery.
Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Wednesday, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, by Monsignor Karl Glovik. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery, with military rites by Hanford Post 5. A rosary will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Teahen Funeral Home, where friends may visit from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. Wednesday.
Survivors include three daughters, Kathleen (Scott) Felton of Fairfax and Debra Jones and Mary Grissom, both of Cedar Rapids; two sons, Joshua (Angel) Farrell of St. Charles, Mo., and Nicholas (Kristina) Farrell of Cedar Rapids; three grandchildren, Megan Grissom, Wesley Farrell and Everest Farrell; two brothers, Russell (Betty) of Wellman and Lester (Mary Francis) of Iowa City; three sisters, Orpha Kempf of Iowa City, Martha (Vyrl) Justice of Cedar Rapids and Olivia Abshire of Sun City, Ariz.; and two sisters-in-law, Delores Kempf and Ruth Kempf, both of Iowa City.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; parents; son-in-law, Robert Jones; three brothers, Wayne, Warren and Walter; and a sister, Alice I Kempf.
John Wallace Kempf was born Nov. 1, 1929, in Iowa County near Holbrook, the son of Emra and Barbara Schlabaugh Kempf. He married Mary Bridget Finnegan on Jan.9, 1954, in Parnell. She died March 31, 1997. He served his nation in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He worked as train master for the Crandic Railroad for 33 years.
John was a caring, loving and proud husband, father and grandpa. John instilled his wisdom and work ethics in all those he loved. He will live in their hearts forever.
A memorial fund has been established.
