Edna Maria Smith was born October 24, 1907 in Lincoln Township, Iowa County, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph, and Alma Schultz Smith. She graduated from Millersburg High School. After educational training during the summers at Upper Iowa, Iowa State Teachers College and Coe College, she taught in a one room school house near her home. Edna married George Neubauer on June 10, 1936 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua and the couple settled in Amana. They lived in Las Vegas during World War II and returned to Amana where Edna remained until her death. Most recently she resided at Colonial Manor in Middle Amana.

Edna’s life was enriched by her faith. The times she and George would travel “Out West” were special. They saw most of the United States along with a bit of Canada and Mexico. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, and canning. She also had a great love of music. Many hours were spent at the piano with a lifetime of sheet music to choose from. She especially loved to gather together the whole family, including grand and great-grandchildren. Edna spent a lifetime caring for others.
